DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK

----------------------

At 700 PM CHST...0900 UTC...the center of Tropical Storm Saudel was

located near Latitude 12.3 degrees North and Longitude 150.6 degrees

East. Saudel is moving northwest at 7 mph. It is expected to maintain

this northwest course before turning more west-northwest late

Saturday as Saudel passes through the far Northern Mariana Islands.

Though the forward speed has decreased, a quicker motion is expected

to resume Friday. The latest forecast track has shifted a little

farther west and now brings damaging winds closer to Saipan and

Tinian.

Maximum sustained winds remain at 40 mph. Saudel, having struggled to

get better organized today is now showing signs of improving

organization and this should result in a steady intensification

heading into Friday midday, perhaps with a period of rapid

intensification later Friday into Saturday. Saudel could become a

typhoon Friday night and pass through the far Northern Mariana

Islands as an intensifying category 3 typhoon.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward from the center up to

150 miles to the southwest and up to 115 miles elsewhere.

NEXT ADVISORY

-------------

An intermediate advisory will be issued by the National Weather

Service at 1100 PM ChST followed by the next scheduled advisory

at 200 AM ChST early Friday morning.
